BUY THE ART, OR IT'LL BURN!

When the clock strikes midnight, a Toronto art exhibition is going up in smoke.

“The Fire Doesn’t Burn Itself” group exhibition of original works on paper presented by Afterhours Projects is happening Monday in Toronto. Many artists submitted works on paper to the group show knowing that all unsold art will be burned at midnight.

Afterhours Porjects is co-organized by Brett Despotovich - who is the Museum for Contemporary Canadian Art's head of operations - and Katherine Piro. Since the announcement of the show two weeks ago, more than 50 willing artists have sent in diverse 8½ by 11 inch submissions - collages, charcoal drawings, abstract paintings and even a skull sculpture. Although the majority of the pieces vary in price from $50 to $300, there is a wax on paper piece by Nicole Collins that is being sold for $10,000 - a high price to ensure that at least one piece goes up in flames by the end of the night.

“The Fire Doesn’t Burn Itself” is happening from noon until midnight on Monday, Dec. 15 at 109 Niagara St., Unit 201A, buzzer number 668.
