TRICIA MIDDLETON | JESSICA BRADLEY GALLERY
Tricia Middleton's exhibition "Making Friends with Yourself" is the artist’s first solo show at the Jessica Bradley gallery in Toronto. Upon entering the space, one notices that the "pretty" or "feminine" colours appear to be dripping off assemblages of found objects. This state of disarray cautions the viewer that that which initially seems safe and acceptable, is quite the opposite, as the contemporary art belongs to a dystopian realm filled with excess material. Middleton’s signature palette of pastel pink, blue, purple, and turquoise give a cloying Rococo sensibility to the wasteland. Indeed, drawing largely from late Baroque art, Middleton expresses luxury in a shrine-like alter, where the very essence of worship is being critiqued and seemingly melts away.
