Catherine Wilson

Catherine Wilson is an abstract and figure painter currently working and living in Toronto, ON. She studied art history at McGill University in Montreal and has exhibited in Toronto and Montreal.
Wilson's paintings assertively manipulate an already obscured reality to critique contemporary ideas of the ideal female representation. The gaze no longer pertains to the male gender, as women dually consume the body in terms of sexual desirability. Because of the accessibility to the digital version of a person on social media platforms, women easily objectify other women by simply 'liking' an edited and posed image. Wilson creates images that deploy a fractured and edited realism amidst a culture that desires an unattainable standard of beauty. The provocations identified in art partially exist because of modern technology’s ability to mass-reproduce, coupled with the female’s (unconscious) willingness to be absorbed by a society of objectification and consumption.
